HEALTH CARE issues are a
primary focal point for 2007.
Sacramento is considering four major
health care proposals.
A state-wide health care issue is urgently being considered and discussed by/between
the Governor and the Legislature. This combined effort could drastically impact all
retired public employee health benefits. It could also have a dire financial impact.
Think about this; is health care a vested right or simply a benefit that can be changed or eliminate
at the discretion of the employer? San Diego eliminated the employer contribution towards retiree
health care, and others are considering it.
In addition, CalPERS is currently making definitive changes in its health care plan that covers
many of its members in the basic plan. Because of this, RPEA is attending every CalPERS Health
Benefit Committee meeting. Whenever there is an issue that may affect our members, our RPEA
representative speaks up to protect our interests.
RPEA’s Health Benefits Committee has assumed a major role in this situation. Their ongoing study
and informed analysis appear in our RPEA bimonthly newsletter sent to all members.
Our questions are, How will new health care legislation affect retirees, and at what cost?
Where will the state obtain money for these programs”?
Just another reason for you to consider becoming a member of RPEA.
